Digital Edition of Microwaves & RF MAY 2010 Issue:

The May issue is always a special issue for us, as it is dedicated to the International Microwave Symposium (IMS). This year, the conferences and exhibitions included in “Microwave Week” will be held in Anaheim, CA. Check out the lead News report for some of the innovations and trends that will be seen at this year’s show. The News section also includes an RF Primer on tackling MIMO for WiMAX testing. The May product section opens with the Cover Feature “MMICs Serve Key Transceiver Functions.” Read the article to find out which long-time supplier of discrete semiconductor devices is entering the GaAs MMIC market focused on solutions for wireless macro cells, repeaters, and femto cells.

This month’s lead Design Feature explains why thermal management efforts for high-power PIN diode switches should include a combination of test equipment and software that uses thermal imaging and 3D thermal modeling, respectively. In “Antenna Assists MW Power Transmission,” a rectenna dipole element uses matching stubs for increased power capability and improved efficiency for microwave-power-transmission applications at 5.8 GHz. The article, “Low-Power TIA Tunes Gain At 2.4 GHz,” discusses a transimpedance amplifier that employs a current-reuse stage and cascade differential stage to achieve a continuous gain tuning range of 15 dB and low noise figure of 1.061 dB at 2.4 GHz. The following Design Feature illustrates how the use of diversity switching with multiple antennas makes it possible to achieve a 100-percent read rate in a practical RFID system--even when the scanned objects are orthogonal to the interrogator antenna. In “Tiny Ring Hybrid Suppresses Harmonics,” an innovative circuit structure is used to dramatically shrink the size of a ring hybrid coupler even at relatively low microwave frequencies. The final Design Feature explains how adding signal switching capability to an RF/microwave test system requires a number of choices based on understanding different electrical and mechanical switch parameters.

The issue also includes Product Features, industry news, the R&D Roundup, and more. As always, thank you for reading!
